Peter Hale

Peter Hale has over thirty-five years of experience working in the Federal and Nunavut
Governments as a scientific researcher, environmental assessment expert, policy advisor and
wildlife manager. Peter has also planned and provided training to Canadian and foreign
government officials on resource management, project environmental assessment and the role
of strategic environmental assessment and regional environmental assessment.
While with the Canadian Wildlife Service he worked on arctic wildlife issues including the
Circumpolar Action Plan for the conservation of polar bears; the Canadian Species at Risk Polar
Bear Management Plan; and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Nunavut and Northern Quebec
polar bear management plans. In addition, he has been involved in polar bear harvest decisions
and deterrent plans. Peter also supported the Nunavut Department of Environment work on
the Baffin Island caribou.
Peter has extensive experience in the use of science together with traditional knowledge in
wildlife management. This extends from the circumpolar level down to individual wildlife
management units. He also has extensive experience working with Inuit and First Nations
peoples across northern Canada.
