Elijassie Kavik
Member (Government of Nunavut)
I was born in Moose Factory, but I have lived all my life in Sanikiluaq, in the Belcher Islands, Nunavut. Growing up, going camping and hunting was the way of life until I started going to high school and started working. These past few years I have been trying to regain my confidence in hunting. At the same time, I want to help people who depend on hunting and camping for their subsistence. I have a passion for helping people at a community level and outside my community as well.
I served as Mayor for the community of Sanikiluaq from 2006 to 2008. In 2006 and 2007, I also served as a Youth Director for the Qikitani Inuit Association. Between 2008 and 2012, I worked for the Municipality of Sanikiluaq as a Recreation Coordinator and then I worked for the Government of Nunavut as Government Liaison Officer (Sanikiluaq) between and 2008 and 2012.
More recently, I returned to the position of Mayor in the Community of Sanikiluaq and I served from 2015 to 2019.
Since 2016, I have been serving as a Chairman for the Sanikiluaq Hunters and Trappers Association. I also held that position between 2011 and 2013.
In 2020, I was appointed by Qikitaluk Wildlife Executive Board and I was just appointed in June 2020 by the Government of Nunavut to be on Eeyou Marine Wildlife Board.
